How to fix user accounts missing after upgrading to Windows 8.1

Microsoft has released Windows 8.1 version operating system, an update to Windows 8 and most of you have upgraded your system to Windows 8.1. It can be updated either from the Windows store or can be updated through clean install. If you go for a clean install, then you will not face any issues. Generally when you upgrade Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 from Windows store, you will find one or more user accounts sometimes. If you too missing any user account after upgrading to Windows 8.1, then here is how to fix that.

How to fix user accounts missing after upgrading to Windows 8.1

The user account which has gone missing had its entry under the hood of the users directory and we cannot rename it too because rename option is greyed out for it. If we try to create a new user account with the same name, it will not let us to do so.

  • Press Win+R keys to launch RUN dialog box and type sysdm.cpl and hit enter. This action will open System Properties.
  • Here click on Advanced tab and under the User profiles section click on Settings.
  • In the next window you will see all the user accounts on your computer and here Account Unknown is the user account which doesn’t belong to any group.


Here is the procedure for how to recover the missing user account in Windows 8.1.

  • Open command prompt with administrator privileges and enter the below command.
    net localgroup “Administrators” [Computer Name][Missing User] /add

Replace Computer Name with your PC name in the above command and Missing User with the Local account user name which you lost after upgrading your OS. After restarting your computer, use Recover user account option and this will replace the missing account.
